Iowa has diabetes prevention programs all across the state. Check out the resources below to find one near you. These programs are evidence-based and highly successful at preventing type 2 diabetes:

Diabetes Risk Factors

  • Being overweight
  • Being 45 years or older
  • Having a parent or sibling with type 2 diabetes
  • Being physically active less than 3 times a week
  • Giving birth to a baby weighing more than 9 pounds
  • Having gestational diabetes during pregnancy
  • Having polycystic ovary syndrome

Race and ethnicity are also a factor. African Americans, Hispanic/Latino Americans, American Indians, Pacific Islanders, and some Asian Americans are at higher risk.
