Culture Toollkit
According to Merriam Webster, Culture is the customary beliefs, social forms, and material traits of a racial, religious, or social group;also:the characteristic features of everyday existence (such as diversions or a way of life) shared by people in a place or time. In other words, it’s what you grow up with. Culture can be both surface level or embedded. In order to learn about the embedded culture of others, we must be willing to ask questions and learn about experiences. The Iowa WIC Program serves thousands of participants from all races, ethnicities, and backgrounds and employs well over a hundred local agency staff. Rather than waiting for each individual staff person to meet and learn from their own interactions and experiences with people from different cultures, we have provided the following resources and information for the 21 most prevalent racial and ethnic cultural groups in Iowa. Our goal is that this toolkit helps our local WIC staff be culturally competent so they can provide the best nutrition services possible to the diverse group of participants we serve.
