Health Information Technology (HIT) and Promoting Interoperability (PI) Program 
(Formerly known as the "Electronic Health Record (EHR) Incentive Program") 
 

The Iowa Medicaid Promoting Interoperability (PI) Program played an important role in establishing critical health information technology. The program has been dedicated to improving interoperability and patients’ access to health information and to move providers towards advanced use of health information technology to:

  • Reduce Costs 
  • Improve Care and 
  • Advance Coordination Across the Healthcare Platform—resulting in better quality of care, and ultimately healthier lives. 

As of December 31, 2021, all Iowa Medicaid Promoting Interoperability Program incentive payments are complete. Iowa has approved 5,601 incentive payments to eligible professionals and hospitals totaling over $142.7 million dollars.
