What is the end of the public health emergency (PHE)?
The end of the PHE means the flexibilities put into place by the federal government in March 2020 are coming to an end, beginning on May 11, 2023. This includes extra coverages for different Medicaid services, supports and programs.
For example, the home and community-based services (HCBS) and telehealth coverage expanded to cover a wider range of Iowans during the during the PHE. While some states may continue some of these flexibilities, others will be returning to their normal coverage from before the PHE.
