In the BRFSS survey, a standard drink is defined as one 12-ounce beer, one 5-ounce glass of wine, or a drink with one shot of hard liquor. Survey participants were asked “Considering all types of alcoholic beverages, how many times during the past 30 days did you have (5 for men, 4 for women) or more drinks on an occasion?”

Measure Description:

  • The BRFSS Prevalence Estimate is the percent of BRFSS respondents that answered 'drinking five or more drinks (men) or four or more drinks (women) per day on the average’' to the question asked.
