Birth defects such as congenital malformations, deformations, and chromosomal abnormalities are leading causes of infant deaths. Disorders related to short gestation and LBW are second.
Fetuses and young children may be particularly susceptible to harmful effects of environmental contaminants. Many environmental contaminants are likely toxic during pregnancy. Several contaminants cross the placenta and make their way into the circulatory (blood) system of the developing fetus. However, specific health effects identified after a common exposure are often not well understood for years.
Five Year aggregate data is used to reduce the presence of suppressed values due to small numbers. The data can be displayed at the county level, and includes stabilization of rates to better evaluate trends
Infant Mortality Data
Infant mortality is a measure of deaths that occur in infants younger than 1 year of age, and are presented on a five year aggregate basis to reduce the presence of suppressed values due to small numbers. The data can be displayed at the county level, and includes stabilization of rates to better evaluate trends.
Measure Description:
- Infant Mortality is the number of deaths in infants younger than one year of age per 1,000 live births.
Perinatal Mortality Data
Perinatal mortality is a measure of deaths that occur in infants younger than 7 days of age plus fetal deaths that occur at 28 weeks or greater gestation, and are presented on a five year aggregate basis to reduce the presence of suppressed values due to small numbers. The data can be displayed at the county level, and includes stabilization of rates to better evaluate trends.
Measure Description:
- Perinatal Mortality is the number of deaths in infants younger than seven days of age plus the number of fetal deaths at 28 weeks or greater gestation per 1,000 live births.
Neonatal Mortality Data
Neonatal mortality is a measure of deaths that occur in infants younger than 28 days of age, and are presented on a five year aggregate basis to reduce the presence of suppressed values due to small numbers. The data can be displayed at the county level, and includes stabilization of rates to better evaluate trends.
Measure Description:
- Neonatal Mortality is the number of deaths in infants younger than 28 days of age per 1,000 live births.
Post Neonatal Mortality Data
Post neonatal mortality is a measure of deaths that occur in infants between 28 days of age and 1 year of age, and are presented on a five year aggregate basis to reduce the presence of suppressed values due to small numbers. The data can be displayed at the county level, and includes stabilization of rates to better evaluate trends.
Measure Description:
- Post Neonatal Mortality is the number of deaths in infants between 28 days of age and one year of age per 1,000 live births.
