The Iowa Community Corps is a new, Public Health AmeriCorps program at the Iowa Department of Health & Human Services. AmeriCorps members serve directly with community-based organizations and government agencies to tackle our stateβs most pressing challenges. Members receive a living allowance and education award for their service, while gaining a professional network, skills, and professional development to forge a successful career in public health.
Iowa Community Corps AmeriCorps members make a tangible difference in the communities they serve through the following efforts:
Build Capacity
- Help organizations expand or enhance program services to reach more community members through quality programs
Expand Food Security
- Support programs that increase access to nutritious and culturally appropriate foods
Provide Resource Navigation
- Connect individuals and families to public health resources that are available in their communities
Promote Civic Engagement
- Engage community members while getting experience in volunteer management
Community Health Worker Training
Community Health Workers are a growing workforce of health professionals that advance care coordination, health equity, and population health. The Iowa Community Corps offers Community Health Worker training and certification to all members. Members will complete the Community Health Worker Professional Skills Training and receive a professional certificate from DMACC upon completion.

Through our program, AmeriCorps offers opportunities with different time commitments and requirements, meaning you can serve in whatever capacity works best for you. Check out our AmeriCorps positions and benefits in the table below. Members are enrolled on a rolling basis.
Our AmeriCorps members serve at local non-profits, food pantries, faith-based organizations, and public health departments in a number of ways to address social determinants of health. Members pilot new programs, manage community gardens, coordinate mobile food pantries, participate in food recovery efforts, develop nutrition and educational resources, screen and refer individuals to economic relief programs, and more. Some examples of positions available within our program include:
