WIC Breastfeeding Support

The Iowa WIC Program is here to help moms meet their breastfeeding goals. Here are some of the ways WIC provides support to moms:

  • Evidence-based breastfeeding education and resources
  • One-on-one breastfeeding assistance
  • Qualified breastfeeding support professionals
  • Breastfeeding Peer Counselors (some agencies have bilingual Peer Counselors)
  • Breast pumps and breastfeeding accessories
  • Breastfeeding classes
  • Breastfeeding support groups
  • Breastfeeding assessment and weight checks

WIC Staff Breastfeeding Training

WIC staff across the state are trained and qualified to provide breastfeeding support to WIC participants. Iowa WIC strongly encourages all nurses and dietitians to obtain extended breastfeeding credentials such as International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC), Certified Lactation Specialist (CLS), Certified Lactation Counselor (CLC), and Certified Breastfeeding Specialists (CBS), and assists staff with obtaining these credentials. Staff attend ongoing breastfeeding training opportunities annually to learn about current best practices for providing breastfeeding support to WIC families.

The USDA WIC Breastfeeding Award of Excellence was established to recognize local WIC agencies that have provided exemplary breastfeeding promotion and support activities through the Breastfeeding Peer Counseling Program. Recognition is given at three levels that build on one another: Gold Award, Premiere Award, and Elite Award. Awards received are active for four years. More information, including Iowa awardees, can be found on the USDA WIC Breastfeeding Award of Excellence page.
