Medicaid Waivers

 1115 allows states to test new and innovative ways to run Medicaid and CHIP programs. These demonstrations give states flexibility to try different approaches, such as:

• Expanding eligibility to people who would not normally qualify for Medicaid or CHIP
• Covering services that Medicaid does not typically cover
• Testing new ways to deliver care that can improve services, increase efficiency, and reduce costs

A 1915(b) Waiver gives states flexibility to manage how Medicaid services are delivered. It can allow states to use managed care, provider networks, and other approaches to coordinate and control the delivery of Medicaid services.
 

A 1915(c) Waiver allows states to provide home and community-based services to people who would otherwise need institutional care. These services help individuals remain safely in their homes and communities.
