This page is designed to provide vital information and updates concerning the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) for Iowa Retailers. SNAP provides nutrition benefits to supplement the food budget of needy families so they can purchase healthy food and move towards self-sufficiency.

Starting January 1, 2026, the rules for what is SNAP-eligible in Iowa will change.

SNAP benefits can be used to buy most food items that are not taxed in Iowa, based on rules from the Iowa Department of Revenue. This includes items such as fruits, vegetables, meat, dairy products, bread, and other grocery foods. You can also use SNAP to buy seeds and plants that grow food for your household to eat.

You will no longer be able to use SNAP benefits to buy items that are taxed in Iowa. For more information on non-taxable versus taxable foods, please visit the Iowa Department of Revenue for the most updated information.
