Early Periodic Screening, Diagnosis and Treatment (EPSDT) is a program for Iowa children to get preventive health care services including oral health services.

Iowa Care for Kids helps families access regular checkups and health care for children to support their growth, development, and well-being.

Eligibility

If your child has Iowa Medicaid and is younger than age 21, Iowa Care for Kids is included in their Medicaid benefits. Iowa Care for Kids is not included for children who have Healthy and Well Kids in Iowa health insurance (sometimes called Hawki).

Covered Services

Iowa Care for Kids covers screenings to make sure your child is healthy, tests for any concerning issues and medically necessary services to treat your child’s conditions.

  • Regular medical checkups
  • Information about growth, diet and development
  • Immunizations (shots) like measles and mumps
  • Regular vision checkups, and glasses
  • Regular hearing checkups, and hearing aids
  • Speech therapy, physical therapy, and occupational therapy
  • Help with mental and behavioral health
  • Regular dental checkups

Where to Get Care

To find out if a doctor, clinic or dentist offers Cares for Kids, ask if they are a "Medicaid Provider." Any Medicaid provider can offer the services.

Work with a Coordinator

An Iowa Care for Kids coordinator can help you:

  • Find a provider Schedule appointments
  • Arrange an interpreter
  • Get transportation 

If you're in a Managed Care Organization (MCO), contact your MCO Member Services to reach a coordinator.

If you have Fee-for-Service Medicaid, call the Healthy Families Line to get connected.
