Providers should check the exclusion databases below when they employ an individual and/or contract with another entity and then check monthly thereafter to assure compliance. When conducting exclusion checks, be sure to search using all known names of the individual or entity, as names can change and often times an individual or entity is excluded under another name. The databases are:
List of Excluded Individuals and Entities (LEIE)
The link below is to the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), Office of Inspector General (OIG), List of Excluded Individuals and Entities (LEIE), a searchable, online database containing all current individuals and entities excluded from participation in Medicare, Medicaid, and any other federal health care program. System for Award Management (SAM)
This link is to the SAM system, a Federal Government owned and operated free web site. The SAM system is consolidating functionality from multi federal systems into one new system (SAM). The Excluded Parties List System (EPLS) is one of the data bases that have been consolidated into the new SAM system. One of the purposes of SAM is to provide a list of individuals and firms excluded by Federal government agencies from receiving federal contracts or federally approved subcontracts and from certain types of federal financial and nonfinancial assistance and benefits. SAM is used to keep agencies abreast of administrative, as well as, statutory exclusions taken throughout the Federal Government.
