The CDC recommends everyone age 6 months and older get an updated COVID-19 vaccine. Everyone aged 5 years and older should get 1 dose of the updated 2023-2024 COVID-19 vaccine to protect against serious illness from COVID-19. People who are moderately or severely immunocompromised may get additional doses of updated COVID-19 vaccine. Children aged 6 months–4 years need multiple doses of COVID-19 vaccines to be up to date, including at least 1 dose of updated COVID-19 vaccine. The COVID-19 vaccination coverage measures include the number of up-to-date individuals, meaning they have received one or more doses of an updated COVID-19 vaccine. These data can highlight trends and patterns in immunization coverage and in different geographic areas.

Measure Description
- Number of Immunized Patients: The number of Iowa residents recorded in IRIS with one or more doses of an updated COVID-19 vaccine. These individuals are considered up to date.
Measure Calculations
- Rate of Immunization: The number of Iowa residents recorded in IRIS with one or more doses of an updated COVID-19 vaccine divided by the state or county population estimate.
- Census Population: The Census population estimate.
Data Notes
- The Iowa Immunization Program uses data reported to IRIS to track and monitor COVID-19 vaccine administration.
- The COVID-19 vaccine data will be updated monthly.
- IRIS receives vaccine administered information on an ongoing basis. Vaccine administration data may change as data is continuously reported to IRIS.
- County indicates the vaccine recipient's county of residence.
- The rate of immunization utilizes the assumption a dose of vaccine equates to a single person to represent the percent of population receiving a COVID-19 vaccine.
- The Iowa Public Health Tracking Portal transitioned from visualizing the initial COVID-19 vaccine formulas and bivalents to the current updated products in November 2023.
- Data for COVID-19 vaccines administered prior to September 2023 is still available. View Data Visualization
