Food Security Survey Results
Roughly every 3 years the Iowa WIC program distributes a Food Security Survey to at least 5% of it's participants. The questions contained within the survey are used to measure the level of food security of our participants. Results of the Food Security Surveys can be found below.
Outreach & Media
PNSS and PedNSS
The Iowa WIC program has several comprehensive reports available which assess health and behavioral characteristics of women, infants, and children enrolled in the WIC Program. The Pregnancy Nutrition Surveillance System (PNSS) and the Pediatric Nutrition Surveillance System (PedNSS) were originally administered by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to monitor the nutritional status of low-income participants in federally funded maternal and child health programs. In Iowa, data for PNSS and PedNSS is only collected from WIC. WIC uses this information to guide public health policy and action. If you would like additional information, contact Iowa HHS for a data sharing agreement.
IowaGrants.gov User Guides
The Iowa Department of Public Health has multiple user guides to assist with usage of the IowaGrants.gov website. If you need any assistance with Iowagrant.gov please use the resources located on the IowaGrants website.

Culture Toolkit
According to Merriam Webster, Culture is the customary beliefs, social forms, and material traits of a racial, religious, or social group; also: the characteristic features of everyday existence (such as diversions or a way of life) shared by people in a place or time. In other words, it’s what you grow up with. Culture can be both surface level or embedded. In order to learn about the embedded culture of others, we must be willing to ask questions and learn about experiences. The Iowa WIC Program serves thousands of participants from all races, ethnicities, and backgrounds and employs well over a hundred local agency staff. Rather than waiting for each individual staff person to meet and learn from their own interactions and experiences with people from different cultures, we have provided the following resources and information for the 21 most prevalent racial and ethnic cultural groups in Iowa. Our goal is that this toolkit helps our local WIC staff be culturally competent so they can provide the best nutrition services possible to the diverse group of participants we serve.

Focus Security
Focus Security Requests for Local Agencies
For new employees, print the New Employee Training Checklist to use as a standardized checklist with all new employees to assure core tasks and responsibilities are completed. WIC Coordinators must complete a New User Request Form before a two-factor authentication code and access to Focus can be provided. This form needs to be sent to the WIC help desk email. Focus access is only allowed for employees who are paid with WIC funds due to participant confidentiality.
Upon an employee's exit from employment under the WIC program, an Inactivate User Request Form needs to be completed and sent to the WIC help desk email on their last day of employment.
Personnel
Local Agency New Employee Orientation
Refer to your human resource director and WIC policy "Local Agency Personnel Training" for guidance on minimum local agency orientation requirements.
New Employee Focus Training
Complete Focus Training and Homework
WIC staff must complete Data System Training before being granted security rights to the data system production system. To schedule Focus training, WIC coordinators need to send a New User Form to wichd@idph.iowa.gov to schedule a three-hour training with the state office. The New User Form and additional information can be found on the Focus Security tab. Additional on-the-job training must be provided by someone with equal security rights.
New Employee Training Course (NETC)
Links and resources to the required training activities can be found here. The Iowa WIC Program requires all training activities to be successfully completed and documented according to the instructions in policies. Completed training must be documented in the "Staff Training" panel in the WIC Data System.
Modules, Online Courses and Activities
Level 1
Level 1 NETC Modules will help build a common knowledge base about program operations while emphasizing a team approach. Level 1 modules need to be completed within one month of hire for all required staff. At the conclusion of each module, the online post-test is required.

- Preschool Module Updated October 2022
Note: Post-tests are to be taken after you have finished reading the corresponding module. Once you finish the test and click submit you will get a pop-up box. Click on "View Score" and review your answers. If you answered any questions incorrectly you will want to close out of the review and go back to the pop-up box and click on "Edit Your Response." Review those parts of the policy/module again that you missed and correct those answers before submitting them again. After you have corrected your test and resubmitted your response you can close out and proceed to the next step in your New Employee Training.
Level 3
Level 3 NETC Modules address how staff can engage the participant in dialogue about their needs and goals of healthy behavior. This process is critical in meeting the nutrition education goals of WIC. Level 3 modules need to be completed within nine months of hire for CPAs, Non-CPA professionals, Health Professional Lead Staff and WIC coordinators. The module is interactive, answers within the slide show are recorded and must be completed including the request for feedback at the end. To play audio click on the headphones icon on the bottom right-hand side of the slides and then select the play button.
